dilemmas

We saw a 6 year old boy with abdominal pain, I thought he had a bowel obstruction so he needed to be admitted to hospital for observation. We have an out patient clinic only at the moment so we transferred him to the provincial hospital where he had surgery to remove part of his bowel. He had to stay in hospital for a week to recover and have intravenous medication so we went to review him every day. Just before discharge his wound opened exposing his bowel so he needed a second operation. the family had run out of money and wanted to take his son home, it was essential he stayed so I paid for his medicines, the family was very grateful. I thought it was the right thing to do and then some more families arrived at our clinic and asked for money to pay for medical bills as treatment is not free in Laos. The team pointed out I was being noble but creating an unsustanable expectation. I'm glad I could help this family but you can't help everyone so may make a different decision next time. It's so difficult, I find it annoying that there is so much inequality in the world. We are so lucky in the UK to have free health care provided by the world's top rated health service, despite the Conservative party trying to destroy the NHS.

Hmong batique creations

Fantastic Day with Sarah and Adam at Ock Pop Tok, a beautiful setting by the Mekong for the day creating our Hmong batiques. Loved out teacher, learned a new word, geng lai which means very good, needed her help for the curvy bits. It's very relaxing making patterns on hemp with wax even when you get into your groove and the quile runs out of wax. Next step dying it indigo and future visitors I'm taking you here for more textile creations

A trip to the wild west!

Adam and I went on a beautiful bike ride in Chomphet.
A very early start 5.45 am! to avoid the heat but time for a coffee before the ferry to the wild west, Chomphet! What a contrast to Luang Prabang just meters across the Mekong; no tarmac, no tourists, no traffic, bliss and the same calm, gentle, happy locals. Stunning scenery, undulating hills, too many undulations, I whimpered far out quite a bit, my thighs were burning! got off and pushed a few times, sweated heaps.
Loved stopping at the villages to buy drinks and check the map with the locals. At one stop I think we were being asked to help a young mum buy food for her baby, the shop had lots of unhealthy snacks and I wanted to get them something nutritious, found her some eggs. Loved bumping into a group of machette weilding men and the highlight was our encounter with 2 elephants, not your ordinary Sunday morning!
50 Km later we were back in Luangers by 11.30 full of achievement and ready for another coffee and breaky!

The cup final

Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital challenged us to a football match.
They requested we hire the pitch and provide refreshments and wanted a men only match!
We agreed to pay but insisted on a women's team too.
Anong was our very enthusiastic captain, he was a star, and looked great in his new kit!
The boys lost 2-0, boo, the girls drew 1-1, their girls played dirty, hair pulling, shirt pulling
I kicked the ball once I think! much better at cheer leading!
We sweated heaps, Peng the most, Xiongher needed treatment for cramp and we recovered with BeerLao!
